Strawberries are one of the easiest and most reliable fruits to grow. They can be grown almost anywhere – in borders, containers or hanging baskets.
Strawberries need sun, shelter and fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid areas prone to frost and soils that have previously grown potatoes, chrysanthemums or tomatoes, because they are all prone to the disease verticillium wilt. Buy pot-grown plants or bare rooted runners that are certified disease free. Strawberries are traditionally grown in rows directly into the garden soil. Avoid windy sites which will prevent pollinating insects from reaching the flowers. In poor soils grow in raised beds, which improves drainage and increases rooting depth. Lightly soak the root balls first before planting, then firm-in and water well. Keep the area free from weeds to make sure the soil doesn't dry out. The plants can also be grown in large containers placed in a sheltered, well-lit corner of the plot. During the spring and summer, container-grown plants must be watered regularly and given a dose of liquid fertiliser
