Here is how to harvest them like a pro to ensure the best flavor and a longer shelf life.

  1. The "Ripe" Test Look for a uniform, deep red color across the entire fruit.

Check the shoulders: The area right under the green cap is the last to ripen. If it’s white or green, leave it for another 24 hours.

The Aroma: A truly ripe strawberry will smell like "strawberry candy" even from a few inches away.

Firmness: It should be plump and slightly soft to a gentle squeeze, but never mushy.

  1. The Technique (The "Pinch and Twist") Never pull the berry directly. Strawberries are delicate and their stems are surprisingly strong; pulling can damage the plant or bruise the fruit.

The Move: Grip the stem about 1cm above the berry between your thumbnail and forefinger.

The Snap: Give it a quick twist and a snap. The berry should come away with its green cap (the calyx) and a small bit of stem still attached.

Why the cap? Leaving the green cap on prevents the berry from "bleeding" juice and rotting prematurely.
