The Green or French Bean is actually native from South America. Whilst the runner bean reigns supreme in the UK, in most of Europe, it is the haricot vert which is king in the summer. The french bean is a half hardy annual which cannot stand frosts. There are many varieties to choose from.

How To Grow

Sow a seed in 5 cms deep trenches about 10 cms apart from each other. Water regularly in dry weather and ensure you protect seedlings from slugs. You'll also need to support the plants as they grow.

Harvesting

You can start picking when the pods are about 10 cms long. They should snap easily when bent.
