Fig Tree

Many people see Figs as a fruit, but the fig is a developing flower head. People eat figs throughout the world. But they are grown in warmer parts (Greece, Turkey and California). Colder parts of the world may only know the taste of dried figs, but the fresh figs have a sweet, honey taste that far surpasses the dried alternative (the difference is similar to the difference between grapes and sultanas) Figs are sweet, so they are mainly used in desserts, although you can also use them in savoury dishes.

How To Grow

Figs are relatively easy to grow. They will grow well from a cutting. If you know someone with a fig tree, you can ask nicely for a cutting. Cuttings will grow if placed in good moist compost. If growing in colder climates, it is best grown in a large pot so that you can bring it indoors or into a greenhouse during the winter. Or plant them up against a sunny sheltered wall and protect with fleece in the colder months. Figs need a sunny position so that the fruits can ripen properly.
