Supermarkets have confused what is broccoli and what is calabrese by calling both by either name. The large green heads are really calabrese.
Grown from seed or bought as small plants. Sowing can be done from early March to late June, sow thinly 1.5cm deep and 20cm between rows. When the plants have 3 pairs of leaves they can be transplanted, keeping as much of the root ball as possible, into rows where the plants are 40cm apart and 40cm between rows.
Harvest the large green heads before they open to flower. Once the main flowering stem is harvested the plant will continue to produce smaller heads as side shoots, which can also be harvested.
